Azerbaijan Starts Gas Supplies to Italy and Other European Countries

On December 31, Azerbaijan began commercial gas supplies to the Europe via the Trans-Adriatic Gas Pipeline (TAP), according to Azerbaijan in Focus, reporting Turan News, referring to the country’s Ministry of Energy.

TAP is part of the Southern Gas Corridor, which runs from Baku to Italy. The project plans to transport 10 billion cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas to Europe for 25 years.

8 billion cubic meters of gas will be supplied to Italy, 2 billion cubic meters – to Greece and Bulgaria. The rest of the gas is planned to be exported to neighboring markets.

The construction of the TAP began in 2016 and was completed in October 2020, the project cost € 4.5 billion. The total length of the gas pipeline is 878 km (through Bulgaria, Greece, Albania to Italy), gas is transported from the Azerbaijani Shah Deniz field. Thanks to the throughput capacity of the gas pipeline, its capacity can be increased to 20 billion cubic meters per year.
