Jeyhun Bayramov: We see Iran’s intention to take serious steps to resolve differences
“Iran is a neighboring state and Azerbaijan has always been interested in the positive development of relations with Iran,” stated Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, answering journalists’ questions.
According to him, recently tensions have arisen between the parties.
“However, during the meeting of Iranian Foreign Minister Hussein Amir Abdullahian with President Ilham Aliyev, there was an opportunity to openly discuss relations. We see and feel Iran’s intention to take serious steps to resolve the differences between the two countries. In this case, the Azerbaijani side will also take adequate steps,” Bayramov said.
According to him, Azerbaijan insists that all those involved in the attack on the Azerbaijani embassy in Iran suffer the deserved punishment.
“We have serious expectations in this matter. There are certain reasons for suspending the work of our embassy in Iran,” the minister said.
Bayramov said that in the coming days, a meeting of the co-chairs of the State Commission for Economic, Trade and Humanitarian Cooperation between Azerbaijan and Iran will be held in Iranian Astara.
“Negotiations are coming on a number of issues, including transport, joint use of water resources,” he said.
Relations between Baku and Tehran began to deteriorate after Iran sharply opposed the Zangezur corridor project last year and began conducting military exercises near the border with Azerbaijan. Iranian politicians also began to threaten Azerbaijan because of the decision to open an embassy in Israel.
Relations finally deteriorated after an armed attack on the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran, which resulted in the death of an employee of the diplomatic mission.
Recently, however, Tehran has begun to take diplomatic steps to normalize relations. Baku sets as a condition for this the identification and punishment of all those involved in the terrorist act against the Azerbaijani embassy.
