Ramiz Mehdiyev: I am resigning because of my age

President of the National Academy of Sciences Ramiz Mehdiyev has resigned due to his advanced age, and not because of the critical publications and statements addressed to him that have been heard recently. Mehdiyev himself stated this at a meeting of the Presidium of the Academy on Monday, according to Azerbaijan in Focus, reporting Turan News, citing the message on the Akademy website, which appeared on the evening of February 14.

Mehdiyev noted that he was always loyal to the state and to the course of Heydar Aliyev. He noted that the head of state, Ilham Aliyev, treats him “hotly” and highly appreciates him.

In conclusion, Mehdiyev said that he would submit his resignation to the head of state, the report said.

Note that the position of President of the National Academy of Sciences is selective. The head of the academy is elected by scientists, and the decision to resign must be submitted to the Presidium, and not to the head of state, who cannot influence the election of the head of the academy in any way.
